Urban garden both nutritionally, spiritually fulfilling

Katie Tavey didn’t know she was a garden person until she stepped into Joe Icet’s secret world.
“I’m in love, guys,” the 16-year-old Klein Forest High School student announced to a handful of other students as she munched on a mysterious stalk of green. “I don’t know what it is, and it’s burning my tongue, but it’s yummy.”
Icet smiled, counting another convert to his dream of better living through lettuce.
By day, Icet works as a refrigeration mechanic, often in the chemical plants lining the Houston Ship Channel. In his free time, this blue-collar worker with a philosophical bent can be found in a secluded corner of the Fifth Ward, on land hemmed in by railroad tracks and warehouses, hidden from casual passers-by.
